When I was diagnosed with HIV in February 2015, I didn’t know what the future would hold.

Living in Ottawa, I went to my local sexual health clinic to get tested. When it come back positive, I felt overwhelmed, isolated, and uncertain. I believed no one would love me, and I would be alone for the rest of my life.

Like many who are newly diagnosed, I feared the stigma, judgment, and misinformation that surround the virus.

Then I learned about U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable), a transformative campaign - backed by ground-breaking science - to deliver a message the entire country needs to hear and understand.

Randy Davis, known as 'The Accidental HIV Activist,' is a passionate advocate for HIV awareness and support based in Barrie, Ontario.

What is U=U?

U=U has one simple message: people living with HIV who are on effective medical treatment and maintain an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus sexually.

This fact, confirmed through rigorous studies like PARTNER and HPTN 052, has been embraced globally by health organizations and advocates.

For me, U=U changed my life. It gave me the confidence to live without fear of passing the virus to others and helped me dismantle the stigma I’d internalized.

The importance of U=U is more apparent than ever as we confront rising HIV rates in Canada. According to the latest data from the Public Health Agency of Canada, there were 2,434 new cases of HIV in Canada in 2023, a 35.2% increase from 2022.

With the national rate for new HIV diagnoses now at 6.1 per 100,000 people (up from 4.7 in 2022), this highlights the urgent need for campaigns like U=U to educate the public, reduce stigma, and encourage testing and treatment.

Reducing stigma, breaking barriers

But U=U isn’t just for those living with HIV—it’s for everyone. When the general public understands U=U, it reduces stigma, which is often a major barrier to people seeking testing or treatment.

Stigma fuels silence, and silence fuels new HIV acquisitions. By spreading awareness of U=U, we create an environment where people feel safe getting tested and accessing care without judgment.

As the creator of the 'I Can Give U' campaign, a social media initiative, Davis aims to dispel myths around HIV and champion the U=U message

Understanding U=U fosters compassion and dispels myths about HIV transmission. People often fear what they don’t understand, and misinformation about HIV persists in Canada.

By sharing the science of U=U, we can build a more informed society where people living with HIV are treated with dignity and respect.

The campaign is also key to ending new HIV acquisitions. When people know that effective treatment stops transmission, they are more likely to support policies that ensure everyone has access to care, from urban centers to rural communities.

This isn’t just about equality; it’s about equity- ensuring everyone has the resources and opportunities they need to live well and prevent transmission.

This message ties directly to the work I’m doing as the community mobilizer for REACH Nexus.

Through initiatives like The Positive Effect and pozcast, we’re amplifying the voices of people living with HIV, sharing their stories, and spreading the word about U=U.

These platforms provide a space for connection, education, and advocacy—key components inbreaking down the barriers that still exist around HIV.

The science is clear, and the tools are here. But we can’t end the HIV epidemic in Canada without public understanding and support.

U=U is more than a message—it’s a movement, and it’s one that needs all of us to make it a reality.
